Fira, the capital of Santorini
Fira, the capital of Santorini since the 18th century, is a village that never sleeps. Get there early in the morning, when it is all very quiet, to enjoy the breathtaking view to the caldera from the Cathedral and then head either to the Archaeological Museum or to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera to admire the ancient civilizations that marked the land of Santorini up until today. Wandering around Fira, you will be surprised by the unique architecture of the houses and the mansions, the majority of which operate today as hotels or restaurants, yet withholding the atmosphere of a different, distant era. Heading north towards Firostefani, you can visit the Catholic Convent which is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. At the southern side of Fira, the Kato Fira, visit the church of Agios Minas, a landmark of the orthodox Cycladic architecture.
Fira is the ideal place for you to buy all the souvenirs you wish for your beloved ones back home. There is a large selection of shops for every taste, from classic souvenir shops to high-end venues where you will find all the modern trends, as well as delis and wine stores where you can buy the traditional products of the island such as the famous Vinsanto wine. And after all the shopping exploits, just relax at a café or restaurant enjoying your favorite drink or a meal and admire the amazing views to the caldera for hours. There is something for everyone, from authentic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine to Asian and international or even fusion.
When the night falls, Fira turns from a romantic destination to the epicenter of partying in Santorini. Lots of different bars and clubs open their doors every night welcoming you to savor your favorite cocktail and dance all night until the first rays of light appear in the clear sky of Fira.
